History Taking & Preparation for EMDR Therapy in Complex Cases

Approved for 14 EMDRIA Credits

Cases of single incident posttraumatic stress disorder often permit a degree of standardization in history taking and preparation phases of EMDR. However for clients with complex histories of neglect and trauma a standardized approach is seldom appropriate, and may even be destabilizing. Issues of emotional dysregulation, pervasive shame, rigid personality defenses, covert dissociative phobias and subtle triggers for relational re-enactments, can lead to difficulties ranging from failing to identify essential symptoms to rejecting clients as "too difficult" to treat. This workshop will present strategies for developing flexible and effective approaches to the history taking and preparation phases of EMDR therapy.
