Memory Reconsolidation & EMDR (Morning)/ Children & Adults Processing Childhood Memories with EMDR (Afternoon)

Approved for 6 EMDRIA Credits

Bruce Ecker will use recent developments in neuroscience research, specifically in the area of memory reconsolidation, to explain the ingredients necessary for a psychotherpy approach to be truly transformational. He will list the elements identified by research that are necessary for transformational change to occur. After Ecker explains how this research applies to a variety of therapeutic approaches, he will lay out a set of steps to ensure that these elements are present. Phil Manfield will then play a video of a full length EMDR session, stopping it at times to show how these elements are indeed present in EMDR treatment.

Joan Lovett will demonstrate similarities and differences between young children addressing traumatic memories and adults processing traumatic childhood memories. Adults can usually explain what happened and have the adult perspective available during processing.  They may need cognitive interweaves asking about safety, responsibility and choices. Children need to have cognitive interweaves in the form of information, reassurance and imaginative interweaves. With children and adults processing early childhood memories, it’s important to process memories one step at a time, beginning before the traumatic experience, similar to adults processing recent events.
