Frequently Asked Questions
These FAQs may help with your search for an EMDR therapist for yourself or as a referral. If you are an EMDRIA member having trouble finding your own profile, see below.
Why am I not getting any results for my search?
The simplest answer is there aren't any profiles that meet your search criteria. It's also possible there aren't any therapists in the area you're searching. In either case, widening your search may yield results. For example, if you're searching for a location and a specific Specialty Area, try removing the Specialty Area from your search. If you're only searching a 5 mile radius for a specific Zip Code, try searching using a 25 mile radius.
Why am I not getting any results for my radius search?
You're not using a wide enough radius.
If you're searching just by City and State, the search engine will use a default zip code to yield results. Set the Radius field to at least 25 miles to ensure that you get the entire city in the results.
A therapist in that area may not have a validated directory address.
A validated address is required on the member profile in order to appear in radius search results. If you aren't getting any results with a radius search, try using the Find a Therapist (General Search).
A validated address means that the address has been validated through the United States Postal Service as being a valid mailing address. This is required in order to make the radius search function work properly. Please note that it may or may not be the same as the physical location of the therapist's office. Typically, if the mailing address is different from the physical address, it will be noted in the "Additional Address Information" section on a member's profile. This is to help you find the address when using a mapping service (Google Maps, MapQuest, Yahoo Maps, etc.) or give you additional information (landmarks, building names, etc.) that may help when traveling to the actual location.
Why am I getting 1000+ records for my search results?
Your specific search criteria did not come through when performing the search. This can sometimes be caused by an out-of-date web browser or poor connectivity. You’ll be able to see if your search criteria were included properly by looking at the blue box at the top of the search results page.
In the example below, you’ll see the 3rd bullet says “Within 25 Miles of Austin, TX 73301” which shows that “25 Miles” was used for the “Radius” field and “Austin, TX” for the City and State fields.
If all you see in the blue box is the following, it means the search didn’t include your specific search criteria. Therefore, you are seeing all of the records instead of a list filtered by the additional search fields you selected. Try your search again or try your search in a different browser.
Am I able to search for multiple Specialty Areas, Population(s) Served, Languages, or Insurances using the drop-down menus?
Unfortunately, no. The drop-down menus only allow you to search for one term at a time, so you would need to perform an individual search for each term.
How Do I Find the Following?
An EMDR Therapist in Another Country
Use the Find a Therapist (General Search). The Find a Therapist (Radius Search) only works for the United States.
All the EMDR Therapists in a Particular State/Province or Country
Use the Find a Therapist (General Search). When you make a selection for the Country search field, you’ll notice the Location field label change to the correct terminology for that country. For example, when you choose “United States”, the Location field label will change to State. When you choose “Canada”, the Location field label will change to Province. Then use the drop-down menu to make the appropriate selection.
A Therapist by Name
Use the Find a Therapist (General Search), type in any part of the name into the Name search field, and hit Enter or click the "Continue>>" button.
Insurance Not Listed in the Insurance Drop-Down Menu
Use the Other Insurances search field right below it, type in any part of the insurance name, and hit Enter or click the "Continue>>" button.
Active Certified Therapist
Choose “Yes” for the Certified Therapist field and “Active” for the Certified Therapist Status field
Active Approved Consultant
Choose “Yes” for the Approved Consultant field and “Active” for the Approved Consultant Status field
Anyone Who Has Been a Certified Therapist
Choose “Yes” for the Certified Therapist field. This will yield results of both “Active” and “Expired” Certified Therapists
Anyone Who Has Been an Approved Consultant
Choose “Yes” for the Approved Consultant field. This will yield results of both “Active” and “Expired” Approved Consultants
Regional Network or Regional Coordinator
There is a separate search engine for Regional Networks and Regional Coordinators that you may find here.
I am looking for a therapist who I know practices EMDR, but I’m not finding him/her in the Find a Therapist search. Why?
Only active EMDRIA Full Members, EMDR Canada Affiliate Members, EMDRIA Certified Therapists, and EMDRIA Approved Consultants are listed in our directory. If someone has never been a member of EMDRIA, certified through EMDRIA, or is an expired Full Member, Certified Therapist, or Approved Consultant, he/she will not be listed in our directory. We do not provide contact information for expired members.
Additional Tips for Searches
Use Vague Searches If You're Not Getting Any Results
The more fields you fill out on the search form, the more restrictions you put on the returned results. If you are searching using multiple fields and not getting any results, try removing some of your search criteria.
Searching for a Therapist by Name
If you are looking for a specific therapist by name, you may enter any part (first, last, partial, etc.) of their name into the search field. For example, you may only know a therapist’s last name, Jones, or you’re not sure if the first name was “Robert” or “Richard”. You could either search just for “Jones” or “R Jones” or any variation of what the name may be to expand or limit your search.
Searching for Specialty Areas, Population(s) Served, Languages, and Insurance
Please be aware that members are not required to fill out additional information fields like Specialty Areas, Population(s) Served, Languages, Insurance, etc. on their member profiles. If you are performing a search using those fields and are not getting any results, it simply means that none of our members have added that particular term to their profile. It’s important to contact therapists directly regarding the specifics of their practice.
Understanding Certified Therapist / Approved Consultant Status
When looking at a Certified Therapist or Approved Consultant status on a profile, "Active" refers to therapists who are currently in their two-year certification approval period. "Expired" refers to therapists who are certified but have not renewed and/or met the requirements for certification renewal.
If you are seeking certification and are looking for an Approved Consultant to provide consultation hours, you need to select an Approved Consultant with an “Active” status in order for those consultation hours to count towards the certification requirement.

Why is my name (member profile) not appearing in Find a Therapist search results?
You are Not a Full Member of EMDRIA
Associate and Student EMDRIA members are not eligible to appear in the Find a Therapist search regardless of their qualifications. A directory address listing is only a benefit of being an active Full Member, EMDR Canada Affiliate Member, Certified Therapist, or Approved Consultant.
Your EMDRIA Membership Is Expired
Having a listing in the Find a Therapist search is a benefit of EMDRIA membership. Once your membership lapses and you are no longer in your 30-day grace period, your member profile will be automatically removed from search results.
Your Directory Address Has Not Been Validated
As stated during the registration process and on the “Edit My Member Profile” page, your directory address must be validated in order to appear in “Radius Search” results. We review all new member profiles after registration and validate the directory address if we see it has not been done. If any changes are made by the member thereafter, the member is responsible for re-validating the address.
A validated address means that the address has been validated through the United States Postal Service as being a valid mailing address. This is required in order to make the radius search function work properly. Please note that it may differ from your physical location. If your mailing address is different from your physical address, we encourage you to make note of it in the "Additional Address Information" field. This will help potential clients find the address when using a mapping service (Google Maps, MapQuest, Yahoo Maps, etc.) or give them additional information (landmarks, building names, etc.) that may help when traveling to the actual location.
For more information regarding address validation, visit your Edit My Member Profile page. Please note that once you validate a previously unvalidated address, it may take up to 24 hours before your member profile appears in search results.
Your Directory Address Privacy Setting is Set to “Private”
As stated during the registration process and on the “Edit My Member Profile” page, all of the directory address fields (Address, Address Cont., City/Town, Country, State, Postal Code) must have a Privacy setting of “Public” in order to be found in search results. We review all new member profiles after registration and contact the member if we see their privacy settings will affect their Find a Therapist listing. If any changes are made by the member thereafter, the member is responsible for choosing the appropriate privacy settings. There May Be Another Issue with Your Profile
If you are an active Full member with a validated directory address set to the “Public” privacy setting and you are not able to find your member profile in search results, please contact the EMDRIA office at email@example.com or 512-451-5200 and we will address the issue immediately. Please be aware there may be technical issues we need to address either on our administrative site or through our AMS provider. Since technical issues are beyond our control, we do not offer any refunds or discounts on membership if a member profile is not appearing in search results. However, once we are made aware of the problem, we will do everything in our power to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
