About Me

My name is Kristie and I am the Sweary Therapist. I love being a therapist. My favorite part is being a part of the journey as folks learn to live their lives like the bad-asses that they are! As a therapist, I promise to always be authentic and genuine and, for me, that might include dropping those f-bombs and getting into the real shit with my clients. I want my clients to know that they can, and should, express themselves authentically with me, and if that includes colorful language, great! If that's their your style, no worries! All I want is for everyone to express themselves as authentically as possibly! I specialize in using mindfulness techniques to help clients live their best lives. Working with me means you are looking to grow in emotional intelligence, deepen your self-awareness, maximize your self-love, and learn to live grounded in the present moment. I am all about authentic expression, and that includes the speech I use, the color of my hair, and my tattoos. My hair is usually some color of the rainbow, and I have several visible tattoos (but no piercings). I wear jeans and tank tops most days, and I value comfort over style. MY THEORETICAL ORIENTATION Person-Centered / Client-Centered / Rogerian Mindfulness Based Practices Wellness / Holistic Approach Animal-Assisted & Nature-Based

Education & Experience

I received my Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University in December 2018. I also hold a Master's degree in General Psychology from the American Public University System, and graduated with my Bachelor's degree from the University of Central Florida. Before opening my own practice, I had the absolute honor to work at an equine assisted psychotherapy facility as well as the pleasure of working with Hospice patients and their families, and at an in-patient crisis-stabilization hospital unit. I have worked in several different private practices as well as in community based mental health. My experiences include working with veterans, teens, young neurodivergent adults, and adults of all ages. Some of the common diagnoses I have worked with included depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders. Outside of counseling, I am a tenured professor at a local community college, where I have been teaching since 2010. I love teaching and working with students as much as I love counseling.

Professional & Volunteer Affiliations

I am a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
