What is an EMDRIA Approved Trainer™?
An EMDRIA Approved Trainer™ is an experienced clinician and consultant who teaches and leads an EMDRIA approved EMDR basic training. They teach the core content of the EMDR basic training, providing a foundational understanding and application of EMDR therapy for clinical practice and often take the lead or oversee the small group practicum and consultation hours that are part of the course.
Standards for EMDR Basic Training
An EMDRIA™ Approved Basic Training provides, at a minimum, instruction in the current explanatory model, methodology, and underlying mechanisms of EMDR through lecture, practice, and consultation.
The minimum training requirements include:
- 20 hours of instructional material : including an overview and history of EMDR as well as its model, methodology, and mechanisms as a distinguished therapy.
- 20 hours of supervised practicum : demonstrating the practice of EMDR, and
- 10 hours of consultation : integration of EMDR therapy skills with a trainee’s own clinical practice.
These standards are in effect and apply to all EMDR basic trainings regardless of whether the training is offered virtually or in-person.
Become an EMDRIA Approved Trainer™
Fully licensed mental health clinicians in independent practice who have earned the EMDRIA Certified Therapist™ and EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ credentials may apply to become educators in the field as EMDRIA Approved Trainers™ through an extensive application process.
The application process includes both reflection and application of course design and delivery of EMDR basic training policies and requirements.

NOTE: The expectation for the EMDRIA Approved Trainer™ application is that each of the following in their entirety be created PRIOR TO starting the application process:
- All content,
- All learning materials, and
- Learning management system (LMS) built out to include all content/learning materials - even if you intend to teach an in-person course.
While feedback will be provided throughout the application, at this time, the application process does not help you build your basic training materials nor your course in your LMS.
Trainer Renewal
EMDRIA Approved Trainers™ are required to renew their credential every two years as part of an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and high-quality training.
As part of the renewal process, EMDRIA Approved Trainers™ are enrolled in EMDRIA’s learning management system to reflect on and document their training practices, including:
- Reporting of data regarding trainings
- Reflecting on feedback from trainees and their own approach to training practices
- Identifying strategies to meet the needs of diverse adult learner
- Developing teaching skills and demonstrating lifelong learning
Trainer Day Events
EMDRIA’s Trainer Day events are designed for EMDRIA Approved Trainers™, offering opportunities to advance training skills, explore best practices and connect with fellow educator-practitioners.
Sessions focus on teaching strategies, adult learning principles and other topics that support high-quality EMDR training.
