Incorporating identity-affirming practices within EMDR therapy is essential for addressing the complex and intersecting traumas experienced by individuals from marginalized communities, such as those with neurodivergent traits, LGBTQIA+ identities, disabilities, and culturally and racially marginalized [CARM] communities. Research highlights the importance of adapting EMDR to meet the unique needs of these populations. Studies have shown that trauma responses in neurodivergent individuals often present differently, requiring sensory-sensitive approaches and non-speaking methods to foster emotional regulation (Fisher et al., 2023). Similarly, affirming the cultural, racial, gender and sexual identities of participants within EMDR supports deeper healing by addressing the compounded effects of trauma and societal oppression (Sopena et al., 2023).
