Online Course
This online course explores the intersection of sexual trauma, the menstrual cycle, and the use of EMDR therapy to alleviate symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and menstrual-related shame. It highlights the physiological, psychological, and emotional effects of PMS and PMDD and examines how trauma histories can exacerbate these symptoms. Participants will learn to identify key symptoms and triggers of PMS and PMDD, differentiate between trauma and hormonal responses, and assess client readiness for EMDR. The training emphasizes the integration of EMDR into trauma-informed care, offering techniques to adapt EMDR phases—excluding Phases 4–8—to accommodate cyclical emotional fluctuations. Outcome measures, case studies, and client feedback are used to analyze EMDR’s efficacy in reducing trauma-related distress and improving emotional regulation. Additionally, the presentation evaluates the limitations of EMDR in cases where PMS/PMDD symptoms are predominantly physiological. Overall, this session equips clinicians with strategies to tailor EMDR interventions for clients whose trauma and hormonal cycles intersect, fostering improved therapeutic outcomes.
