Course Description
This plenary session will delve into the critical topic of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) in Trauma Treatment and EMDR. This session will offer a comprehensive exploration of why IDEA is essential for effective trauma treatment. The session promises to provide participants with valuable insights and actionable strategies to advance their practice and better serve the diverse client populations. The presenter will discuss a) The importance of IDEA in Trauma Therapy, b) How EMDR practitioners can integrate IDEA principles into their practice to enhance therapeutic effectiveness and client satisfaction, and c) offer practical strategies and tools that participants can apply in their practice right away to promote a more inclusive and equitable therapeutic environment.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe how inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility impact the effectiveness of trauma therapy, including EMDR, and why these principles are crucial for fostering a therapeutic environment that promotes healing and resilience.
- Participants will be able to identify cultural influences in the therapeutic setting and integrate diverse cultural perspectives and experiences into their EMDR practice.
- Participants will be able to use practical strategies and tools to immediately incorporate IDEA principles into their trauma treatment and EMDR sessions.

Maryam Jernigan-Noesi, M.Ed., Ph.D., is a pioneering psychologist, educator, and consultant promoting racial justice and culturally responsive practices. With over two decades of experience, she trained at The Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology at Boston Medical Center and held fellowships at Harvard Medical School and Yale University School of Medicine. Specializing in integrated healthcare and intervention science, she has provided behavioral health services in inpatient and outpatient care in community, medical, forensic, academic, and private practice settings. As CEO of Jernigan & Associates Consulting, she offers expert consulting to professionals in government, healthcare, education, and the private sector.
