According to Perelman School of Medicine’s Center for Brain Injury and Repair (2024), about 2 million Americans suffer some form of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) each year. The prevalence of TBI in the military patient population with PTSD is higher, approximately 20% in service members since 9/11/01; with Lew etal (2009) reporting an even higher incidence in a sample of OEF/OIF Veterans. Many therapists mistakenly presume TBI only applies to patients with major head trauma, when one needs to consider other types and levels of insults to the brain when providing mental health treatment. EMDR can be used to improve quality of life by addressing traumatic memories related to the injury; psychological responses to life and role changes; and/or symptoms such as tinnitus, sleep problems, or chronic pain. This online course will explore strategies for case conceptualization and treatment planning, along with ways to adapt the standard protocol to better fit the needs of this client population. This course is aimed at helping EMDR clinicians gain confidence in the use of EMDR with patients with TBI.
