The treatment of trauma in individuals with autism spectrum disorder using eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy: A critical analysis of the literature
The aim of this study was to critically analyze the research on the use of EMDR therapy for those with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Article Abstract
“The aim of this study was to critically analyze the research on the use of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for those with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The methodology that was used for this dissertation was a critical analysis of peer-reviewed research from 2010 to the present on the use of EMDR therapy for individuals with ASD. Findings show that EMDR is an effective treatment for those with trauma/post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Findings also show that EMDR can be an effective treatment for trauma/PTSD in those with ASD due to its flexibility, adaptability, and that it does not solely rely on spoken language. There are currently no specific guidelines for practitioners to follow in using EMDR therapy with individuals with ASD. Practitioners must use their knowledge of working with individuals with ASD to modify standard/children’s protocols. This dissertation offers researched adaptations to standard protocols that will allow those individuals with ASD to access this proven treatment for trauma/PTSD.”
