EMDRIA member Viviana Urdaneta Melo, LCSW, EMDRIA Chief of Clinical Affairs, was interviewed for the Inside Higher Ed article, “Counseling Centers See a Rise in Traumatized Students,” where she discusses an uptick in college counseling centers offering EMDR therapy. Florida State University counselor and EMDRIA member Julia Coelho is also quoted. “I’ve been here going on six years, and we have more students than ever who are requesting EMDR.” EMDR therapy is offered at Florida State University, where “the majority of clinicians have been trained in … EMDR – including nearly 20 practitioners who received EMDR training on the college’s dime last spring.”

“Trauma is officially trending” is the leading quote in Poosh’s article “How does EMDR work for Processing Trauma.” JEMDR article “Correlates of EMDR Therapy in Functional and Structural Neuroimaging: A Critical Summary of Recent Findings” by Pagani et al. (2013) is called out as a study that uses MRI and EEG brain scans to monitor brain effects of EMDR therapy. As the article abstract states: “This was the first time in which neurobiological changes occurring during any psychotherapy session have been reported, making EMDR the first psychotherapy with a proven neurobiological effect.”

Medriva article “Revolutionizing PTSD Care: New Guidelines Set the Course for Veterans and Service Members” discusses the 2023 clinical treatment guidelines that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) released. The article states: “At the heart of these recommendations is a strong preference for manualized psychotherapies—such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing psychotherapy (EMDR), and prolonged exposure (PE)—over the use of medications like paroxetine, sertraline, or venlafaxine. This approach underscores a growing recognition of the efficacy of psychotherapy in facilitating recovery from PTSD, a condition that affects a significant portion of the veteran and service member population.” Healthdate also covers this in their article “Clinical Practice Guideline Updated for Management of PTSD, Acute Stress.” Synopsis of the clinical treatment guidelines was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine here.

The article “EMDR: The Trauma Therapy Treatment That Changes Lives – Opinion” in The Jerusalem Post discusses trauma and trauma treatments. “Trauma-informed movements have surged over the last thirty years from a variety of streams of thought and innovation. Boasting a robust body of research in the treatment of trauma, is EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.”

EMDR is one of five evidence-based services approved for children’s behavioral health services expansion in New Mexico health care initiative. Article “New Mexico Approved for Community-Based Mobile Crisis Intervention Teams” states that federal funds made the plan possible. New Mexico Human Services Department spokesperson shares, “We are excited to roll out community-based mobile crisis intervention teams in New Mexico. This significant milestone demonstrates New Mexico’s unwavering commitment to expanding access to crucial mental health and substance use crisis care.”

EMDR therapy is outlined as effective in the web article “Can EMDR Help the LGBTQIA+ Community?” Author Daniel Lyons writes: “It’s no secret that members of the LGBTQIA+ community often have significant trauma. A lot of our trauma centers around experiences of rejection and oppression in our communities, and in more extreme cases, we may have even been victims of violence and hate crimes.”
