Course Description
The perinatal period is one of both potential vulnerability and developmental promise for pregnant people, their babies, and families. Whether or not the index trauma is related to pregnancy, research documents the detrimental effects of untreated PTSD on pregnant people, pregnancy itself, developing fetuses, and newborn babies.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify prevalence rates and scope of perinatal PTSD, mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy.
- Participants will be able to name three adverse sequelae for untreated PTSD, mood, and anxiety disorders occurring during pregnancy.
- Participants will be able to identify the differences between adaptive stress, tolerable stress, and toxic stress in during pregnancy and how EMDR therapy mitigates toxic stress.

Mara Tesler Stein, Psy.D., PMH-C, is a clinical psychologist practicing in Chicago and Jerusalem. She is the founder and director of The Touchstone Institute for Psychotherapy and Training where she offers both EMDR Foundational trainings (through The Institute for Creative Mindfulness) for perinatal specialists & advanced EMDR workshops which take a deeper dive into the intersections and applications of EMDR and perinatal mental health.
