About Me
Karen was born and raised in South Africa. She is married with two adult children and five grandchildren, immigrated to Australia in 2003. Karen originally qualified as an early years teacher and then specialised in Specific Learning Difficulties. This was followed by an Honours and Masters degrees in Educational Psychology and then ten years later a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from USQ, Australia. Both Masters research projects involved exploring neurodiversity and current assessment techniques using Jack Naglieri’s extensive research on learning and functioning linked to ADHD, ASD, Specific Learning Difficulties/Dyslexia and Cognitive Impairment. Karen originally worked as a teacher then moved into Learning Support, before becoming the Director of a of a multi-disciplinary team of therapists involved in the assessment and identification of neurodivergent SLD individuals, using a strengths -based and inclusive approach to support their unique ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world. After immigrating to Australia and working for Education Queensland for six years, Karen started a private practice in 2009. A current area of interest for Karen is helping clients overcome the effects of trauma, adversity, and neglect to lead a meaningful life. In support of this role Karen is a registered EMDR consultant and Internal Family Systems (IFS) Level 3 trained therapist and consultant. Karen also uses Schema, CBT, Narrative and ACT therapies to dovetail with IFS and EMDR.
