About Me
Serkan Özgün, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and EMDR Trainer specializing in trauma and family therapy. He earned his B.A. in Psychology from Istanbul University in 1998, followed by an M.A. in 2002, where his research focused on communication in families managing schizophrenia.
In the wake of the 1999 Marmara earthquake, Dr. Özgün transitioned into trauma work, completing his basic EMDR training and volunteering as a therapist for the Turkish Psychological Association (TPD) in the disaster zone. He later spent two years in New York City, completing postgraduate programs in trauma at the International Trauma Studies Program (ITSP) and family therapy at the Ackerman Institute. He earned his PhD from Middle East Technical University in 2010 with a doctoral thesis investigating the traumatic impact of extramarital infidelity.
Dr. Özgün’s EMDR journey with the modality began in 2000. After serving as a facilitator for renowned trainers Udi Oren and Emre Konuk, he became an EMDR Consultant in 2009. He was a founding board member of EMDR Turkey and has collaborated with international experts like Eva Zimmerman and Roy Kiessling. In 2025, he achieved the rank of EMDR Trainer, now leading comprehensive certification programs through EMDR Consultancy and the EMDR & Psychotherapy Association (www.emdrterapi.org).
Throughout his career, Dr. Özgün has held various academic positions, including roles in the Trauma Masters Program at Okan University (2012–2016) and as an affiliated professor at Ozyegin University’s CFT graduate program (2019–2024).
