About Me

In addition to her work as a clinical counsellor, Shelby is passionate about supporting local communities. She volunteers with Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland and has been a youth mentor in the past. Shelby lives in Port Coquitlam with her young family, and loves to spend time with her extended family and friends. Despite a busy life, Shelby makes sure to prioritize self-care; she loves to snowboard, practice yoga, take fitness classes, and is always up to enjoy a delicious meal or lounge on the couch and watch a good show.

Education & Experience

Shelby O’Callaghan is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors. She attended University of Lethbridge and Simon Fraser University and holds a Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminology. Shelby has over 8 years of experience working as a counsellor in Child and Youth Mental Health as well as private practice with primarily adult clients. She is dedicated to creating a respectful, accepting and authentic experience for all her clients, and utilizes a holistic and culturally sensitive approach to achieve this. She has had the privilege or working with Indigenous communities for the past 16 years and loves learning about the diverse cultures and practices within these unique and resilient communities.

Shelby O’Callaghan believes that each person who walks through her door is the author of her or his own unique story, and that each story comprises both profound challenges and personal strengths. She works in collaboration with individuals to help them uncover their strengths and overcome their suffering. Shelby utilizes evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) to help clients pursue personal growth and emotional wellbeing. Shelby especially enjoys using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with her clients to help them heal from past traumas that continue to impact their lives. Shelby specializes in postpartum depression and anxiety, as well as grief and loss of a child. She is also highly experienced in alleviating symptoms of depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal ideation; managing life stressors and transitions; parenting support; improving interpersonal relationships; and enhancing self-worth and self-esteem.
