In this presentation, we will deepen into both conceptual and practical aspects of an Ego State Therapy/EMDR treatment frame, by exploring 1) the dominant paradigm for ‘parts’ work in EMDR therapy and examine contrasts with Ego State Therapy (Watkins & Watkins, 1997), a well-established but lesser acknowledged (and understood) ‘parts’ approach; 2) the potential challenges of focusing on the priorities and needs of adult ‘parts’ to the exclusion of other self-states imposed by this dominant paradigm; 3) different manifestations of post-traumatic flashback more easily understood through the lens of the self-system as a multidimensional dynamic, and the resulting importance of clarifying internal dynamics to ensure appropriate use of EMDR therapy methods; and 4) the intentional ‘mapping’ of the self-system and its psychodynamics, and how this practice can very concretely enhance treatment outcomes in EMDR therapy when treating persons with dissociative features.

Presenter: D. Michael Coy, LICSW
