The United States has, since the summer of 2020, experienced a mass exodus of law enforcement officers (LEOs) for reasons related to mental health, specifically post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this workshop, participants will hear directly from a medically retired Minneapolis police officer who served at the time of the Minneapolis riots (2020), and attempted to use EMDR early intervention protocols, but eventually felt the need to leave the law enforcement profession due to his PTSD symptoms. Officer Manley (Retired), on day 1, will share the history of law enforcement in brief, how law enforcement culture and the mental health profession have interacted with each other, and his journey to his recovery from PTSD as a testament to the power of EMDR treatment. On day 2, participants will learn from the TC Metro Trauma Recovery Network (TC Metro TRN) how early intervention protocols were used to treat these first responders earning them the title of TRN of the year, and how EMDR was used to treat officers leaving the profession due to PTSD. The workshop will highlight the difficulties LEOs experience going through the worker’s compensation process. Therapists will learn about and understand different EMDR readiness considerations, appropriate target selection, safety considerations in treating LEOs, and the appropriate protocols for treating LEOs.

Presenters: Hector Matascastillo, LICSW & Michael Manley
