It is commonly accepted that emotional stress contributes to headaches, stomachaches, or frequent colds. The relationship between stress and illness is amplified when clients have a history of trauma. Unresolved traumatic memories and their related emotional distress can lead to the worsening of symptoms and, in some situations, lead to the development of somatic symptom disorders. Unresolved PTSD can contribute to imbalances in the autonomic nervous system, is correlated with inflammation in the body. The connection between PTSD and illness is particularly strong when there has been exposure to traumatic events in childhood.
