Integrating play therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS) into the 8 phases of EMDR enhances its fidelity and effectiveness. EMDR’s phases—history-taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation—help process trauma systematically. IFS emphasizes relationships with sub-personalities, or “parts,” working with protective systems to access and unburden trauma. Play therapy engages children in their natural language, empowering them during EMDR sessions and enabling deeper access to their internal systems for healing. This approach slows the EMDR process, ensuring emotional safety, restoring trust, and fostering trauma resolution while honoring and supporting the client’s protective parts and inner system.
