Approved for 7 EMDRIA Credits

EMDR therapists will frequently be exposed to clients who have experienced a disaster or a traumatic event. EMDR Therapy has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and acute stress. It is recognized by most professional organizations including: the American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines for treatment of acute stress disorder; the American Psychological Association for treating civilian trauma; the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies as an effective treatment for PTSD; and the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended EMDR Therapy treatment for children, adolescents, and adults with PTSD.

This 2 day workshop will provide the members of the Virginia Community Response Network with the necessary infrastructure, knowledge, and therapeutic skills to respond quickly to a disaster, thus preventing future negative effects that can affect people throughout their lives. It provides EMDR fully trained therapists comprehensive knowledge of how an onsite & virtual response would look as well as ability to utilize both individual & group protocols.

This training will identify Psychological First Aid & stabilization techniques; identify & demonstrate the Recent Events Protocol; applying both Individual & Group EI protocols so there are many evidenced-based treatment options in their tool box to used when responding to disaster situations. There will be several in-depth clinical practicums for members to practice these throughout the training.

Another focus will be helping team members recognize symptoms of vicarious trauma & intervention strategies to use so our members are supported & protected following a response. Developing a feeling of being part of a team of volunteers who work together to help others will be included. And understanding cultural differences when responding to disasters, as well as discussing strategies to engage citizens of color using VCRN trauma services following disasters & crisis situations in their communities will also be shared. Following this training, participants will be ready to immediately respond to disaster & traumatic events.
