For therapists to be successful with First Responders, be it police, firefighters or highway patrol, they have to first understand the unique culture of the first responders’ jobs and work environment. The stress, conflict and trauma some people feel on their worst days is something first responders are confronted with daily. Their bodies take on adrenaline and cortisol on a regular basis. The effects of shift work and trauma first responders encounter often shows up in their relationships when they return home. This is a normal occurrence in this profession. Only a well-trained therapist who is familiar with the first responder culture can help this population effectively with their compassion fatigue or Post Traumatic Disorder and help them gain back the enthusiasm they once had for their job.
