Clinicians who work with children who have been exposed to trauma and adversity often have a treatment plan which includes an effort to help the child to digest these experiences through exposure to the adverse events, whether through a trauma focused approach to play therapy or a trauma protocol such as EMDR or a combination of these. One of the challenges is to use play therapy techniques to develop a shared experience and language for this history as the initial step toward later reprocessing. This online course offers an example of using a playful story and props to guide that process in a manner that will be well tolerated by the child. This “Bowl of Light” story-based intervention is appropriate for play therapy individualized assessment and EMDR (in Phase 1).
