The application of the standard Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) protocol (Shapiro, 2018), as taught in most training programs, often fails with complex trauma. Instead, the result is too much activation (flooding), too little activation (numbing or disconnection), and clients getting stuck looping, often feeling frustration and shame. When the phases of complex trauma treatment have been adhered to (Chu, J. A., et al, 2011), (Cloitre et al., 2012), the effective use of interweaves during EMDR can scaffold and anchor clients helping them reach adaptive resolution. Interweaves used strategically can support time orientation, modulation of affect, awareness of capacities and resources, and help clients hold a reflective stance. This online course will explore how to help clients hold a reflective, present oriented, regulated, and aware stance during EMDR processing. The presenter will describe different categories of interweaves, when interweaves are often necessary, and implementation strategies for interweaves.
