Affirming EMDR at the Intersection of Gender Identity and Neurodiversity

This article explores how therapists can adapt EMDR for clients who are both neurodivergent—such as individuals with autism, ADHD, or other neurological differences—and identify as transgender-gender diverse (TGD), along with highlighting the importance of providing affirming therapy that addresses clients’ experiences at the intersection of neurodiversity and gender-diversity. The author focuses on using the standard EMDR protocol with specific adaptations for ND and transgender gender-diverse clients rather than developing a new protocol. The standard protocol is effective, and since our ND and TGD clients present in many ways, we cannot develop a protocol that will fit all of their needs.
