Within a short space of time, his psychotherapy practice became one that principally offered EMDR therapy to adults, children, and adolescents.

He has taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels across social care, social work, counseling and psychotherapy, mediation, and psychology. He has also provided clinical supervision and worked as a field advisor.

Des initially trained as an EMDR therapist in 2008. He was one of the first EMDR therapists in Ireland. At that time, he frequently traveled to the U.K. for ongoing training and the annual conference, as this was unavailable in Ireland. In 2017, he became an EMDR Consultant. He was a member of the Child and Adolescent Committee of EMDR U.K. and Ireland, working alongside a colleague to organize Continued Education training for child and adolescent EMDR therapists in the UK and Ireland. Des was a member of the initial EMDR Ireland Board and is currently a member of the EMDR Canada Board. Over the last two years, he has been centrally involved with fellow EMDR Canada Board members in implementing a new membership management system and a new website for EMDR Canada.
