The recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States permitting broader access to so-called “conversion therapy” is deeply concerning from a trauma-informed clinical perspective.
EMDRIA’s position is clear: sexual orientation and gender identity are aspects of human diversity and are not disorders requiring treatment. Practices intended to change or suppress these aspects of identity, often referred to as sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts, are not supported by the scientific evidence base and are inconsistent with ethical, affirming care.
From a trauma-informed lens, the mechanisms of harm of these efforts are both predictable and well documented. Interventions that impose identity-based change frequently involve sustained experiences of shame, identity invalidation and coercive pressure targeting core aspects of self. These conditions can contribute to traumatic stress, disrupt attachment and developmental processes, and are associated with increased risk of anxiety, depression and suicidality–particularly among youth.
Consistent with EMDRIA’s focus on the treatment of trauma, clinical approaches should address the impact of such experiences by supporting adaptive processing, restoring a sense of safety and affirming the individual’s identity.
Mental health care should reduce suffering and support adaptive functioning. Practices that seek to alter identity do the opposite.
EMDRIA will continue to advocate for policies and practices that prevent trauma, reduce harm, and ensure access to affirming, evidence-based care.
