Derrick Martin, LPCC-S
I am an independently licensed psychotherapy with a supervisory designation, in the State of Ohio. Prior to my career as a clinical mental health professional, I started out from high school by enrolling in the Ohio Fire Academy. I obtained my national registry certification as a EMT-Basic and also obtained my professional firefighter level I & II. Shortly thereafter, I obtained my national registry certification as an EMT-Paramedic. I worked in the fire service and served numerous positions including EMS Coordinator, HAZ-MAT Level A technician, Advanced Arson Investigator, Fire & Safety Inspector, among other certifications and training. I transitioned into law enforcement, obtaining my Ohio PEACE Officers certification and commission. I served over 12 years combined service serving the citizens of Ohio. In 2008, I was severely injured on duty and forced to resign from my career in public safety. That time in my life was very difficult and at times very dark. Seeking out help, I discovered psychotherapy. Having been diagnosed with complex post traumatic stress disorder, I went through EMDR services which I accredit to saving my life. As a patient, I discovered the good and the bad of various clinicians that I worked with and wanted to raise the bar for the standardization of care, especially for other first responders like me who were suffering.
Education & Experience
I enrolled at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA and obtained my bachelor’s degree in religion and counseling. I furthered my education obtaining my Master of Divinity in Chaplaincy. Serving as a healthcare chaplain I quickly discovered the gift given to me to continue helping others. I enrolled at Ashland University and obtained my degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and became a licensed psychotherapist. Now as independently licensed psychotherapist I work with agencies in creating policy, procedures, and training initiatives to assist first responders. I also provide free educational resources to others through various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
