About Me
Hello! I am Dr. Jenay Garrett is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a National Certified Counselor, and a trained EMDR therapist. I have worked in the human services and mental health fields for over 13 years, working in settings ranging from shelters, non-profit organizations, public schools, in-patient facilities, and outpatient therapeutic services. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, groups, and families with a variety of presenting issues to include depression, self-esteem, various forms of abuse, anxiety, anger, relationship issues, at-risk behaviors, homelessness, foster care, and self-harm. I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced trauma/PTSD, suicidal ideations, anxiety, and depression. I utilize an integrated approach to counseling which includes Trauma-Informed Care, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Feminist Theory, Dream Work, and EMDR to help my clients process through their experiences in a healthy manner. I am passionate about breaking down the stigmas associated with mental health in minority communities, which is the foundation of the Swerve The Stigma Projected she started in July of 2018. I believe that my purpose in life is to use my professional experience, educational knowledge, and passion for service to help other’s journey to a state of peace and healing by providing a non-judgmental space for exploration, support, and growth.
Education & Experience
I attended Old Dominion University earning both my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Human Services and Masters’ degree in Mental Health Counseling. I earned my Ph.D. in Human & Social Services with a concentration in family studies & interventions from Walden University. I also enjoy providing trainings on the intergenerational impact of trauma, workplace culture and communication, and conflict resolution.
Professional & Volunteer Affiliations
When working with clients, I utilize an integrated approach which includes Trauma Informed Care, EMDR, DBT skills, and CBT to help clients process through experiences of trauma, depression, racial issues, anxiety, and relationship issues in a healthy manner. My goal as a counselor is to support, empower, advocate for, and educate my clients.
