Mr. Samuel Totora, LPC; LMFT

EMDR Certified Therapist

About Me

Sam is married to his wife of 43 years. He is a father of four sons, and a grandfather to five grandchildren. He is working in his chosen profession, if a calling can be considered a choice. Two Masters degrees, one in psychology and one in Family Therapy prepared him to work with families, where he began his true lessons in love and connection. He is a New Jersey Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a New Jersey Licensed Professional Counselor. Sam is also a clinical supervisor for new therapists seeking licensure. As a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Sam's membership in this esteemed organization assures the public that he is held to high standards in the performance of his profession. Sam has been trained in multiple therapy modalities, including strategic, structural, and contextual family therapies. His eclectic approach includes several researched- and evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy. Sam provides couples and marriage therapy utilizing the concepts of Emotionally Focused Therapy and adult attachment theory, as well as the teachings of Marshall Rosenberg on Non-Violent Communication (NVC). NVC is also known as Compassionate Communication. Sam works with high conflict couples to help them calm the fears of detachment and disconnection that often underlies the angry cries for acknowledgement and consideration. With his non-judgmental approach, he accepts that for some couples, their choice to divorce may need to be supported and they may need help to separate respectfully and with the skills to co-parent their children successfully. Sam has a special interest in trauma resolution, recognizing that early traumatic experience underlie many, if not most, emotional disorders. He has been Certified in both Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy(TFCBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR), a brain-based rapid trauma resolution therapy which facilitates healing by allowing the brain to reprocess and reconsolidate painful memories. Sam is trained in hypnosis, emotional regulation techniques and mindfulness.
