About Me
Dr. Sirena Pangelinan, PhD, LPC, is a Virginia Licensed Professional Counselor, EMDRIA Certified Therapist, and founder of Ember and Thread Therapy, LLC, a trauma-focused private practice in Glen Allen, Virginia. With nearly a decade of experience in the mental health field, she specializes in complex and developmental trauma, PTSD/CPTSD, attachment wounds, intergenerational trauma, neurodivergence, personality disorders, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and relational difficulties.
Sirena believes that mental health symptoms are often just the tip of the iceberg. Her clinical approach extends beyond symptom management to explore the underlying experiences, protective adaptations, attachment needs, and relational patterns that shape how individuals experience themselves and the world.
Grounded in attachment theory and Gestalt therapy, Sirena integrates Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with somatically informed interventions, parts-informed approaches, Polyvagal Theory-informed practices, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She emphasizes relational attunement, nervous system regulation, and here-and-now experiences to support clients in processing difficult histories without becoming overwhelmed by them.
Sirena earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University, along with a certificate in addictions counseling. She also holds bachelor's degrees in Social Work and Psychology from Ferrum College. Her doctoral research examined clinical supervisors' attachment styles and supervisory relationship effectiveness, further reflecting her commitment to understanding the influence of attachment across therapeutic and professional relationships.
Through Ember and Thread Therapy, Sirena strives to help individuals move beyond simply surviving toward meaningful, sustainable, and enduring recovery.
Education & Experience
Sirena brings nearly a decade of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, older adults, couples, and families across outpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, community-based, and intensive treatment settings. Her clinical background includes complex trauma, severe mental illness, attachment disruptions, eating disorders, substance use disorders, neurodivergence, and complex relational presentations.
As an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, Sirena specializes in trauma-focused psychotherapy that integrates EMDR with attachment-based, somatically informed, experiential, and parts-informed approaches. Her work emphasizes individualized case conceptualization, stabilization, emotional regulation, and the therapeutic relationship as foundational components of trauma processing. She supports clients in exploring not only distressing memories, but also the beliefs, bodily responses, and protective patterns that developed through their experiences.
Her professional background includes outpatient and intensive trauma therapy at Seeking Depth to Recovery, residential and partial hospitalization treatment at Aster Springs Treatment Center for Eating Disorders, and community-based and family-focused services through the Attachment and Trauma Institute and other mental health organizations.
In addition to direct clinical practice, Sirena has experience in counselor education and clinical supervision through Capella University, providing instruction, observation, supervision, and clinical feedback to master's-level counseling students. Her doctoral research on attachment within supervisory relationships further informs her relational approach to clinical practice, professional development, and the therapeutic alliance.
Across these settings, Sirena has remained committed to helping individuals expand their capacity for emotional regulation, develop greater self-understanding, and create lasting change that extends beyond traditional talk-only therapy.
