Within the first parent/caregiver intake sessions, the goal is not only to “get the history,” but also to understand the child in context: developmentally, relationally, emotionally, behaviorally, medically, socially, and within the family system. A child assessment should include developmental, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, educational, biomedical, family, peer, and social components. Children and youth rarely present with symptoms in isolation. This module introduces clinicians to a systemic approach to assessment, helping them look beyond the presenting problem to better understand the family dynamics, caregiver-child relationship, emotional safety, and home environment surrounding the child.
