This course (May 29 – July 11, 2026) introduces a developmentally informed framework for treating complex trauma and dissociative disorders, with specific emphasis on developing mentalizing and reflective functioning capacities, as these capacities are needed to integrate trauma. The EMDR-A approach integrates neurobiology, attachment theory, theory of mind, dissociation, and defense theory into one unified approach. Clinicians will learn the neurological and relational underpinnings of complex trauma and dissociative disorders (including the formation of dissociative self-states) from this unified approach, and it emphasizes how clinicians need to assist clients in building the neuronal architecture to support mentalization and reflective functioning capacities for trauma resolution.
