EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Somatic Experiencing: The Therapy Team You Didn’t Know You Needed

More and more, EMDR therapists are integrating the various intersections of the modality with other therapies to facilitate healing and reprocessing. A prominent area of focus includes the intersection of EMDR and ego states, which clinicians can accomplish through integrating modalities such as Internal Family Systems (IFS). Another area of integration is how clinicians address trauma’s impact on the nervous system with somatic-based modalities, such as Somatic Experiencing (SE). The bulk of this article describes the many ways that two well-known modalities (Internal Family Systems and Somatic Experiencing) intersect with EMDR to provide vast healing to the persons’ system.
