Trauma inflicted by someone you are closely tied to involves a level of betrayal, confusion, fear, and impact. If the abuse is repeated—as often is the case with intimate partner violence—the complexity of the trauma can be increasingly difficult to process and resolve. In this article in the Spring 2023 issue of Go With That magazine, author Jill E. Schwarz, Ph.D. serves as a research consultant for a sexual and domestic violence agency in the northeast. Schwarz describes a pilot study designed to determine the impact and efficacy of EMDR as a treatment approach for clients who had experienced trauma due to sexual and/or intimate partner violence.
