Integrating EMDR and Couples Therapy
Integrating EMDR therapy into couples therapy is a promising new trend in psychotherapy. Across different approaches to couples therapy, authors roundly credit EMDR with increasing empathy, improving secure attachment, reducing reactivity, and increasing the couples’ relationship satisfaction (Linder et al., 2022). Despite this, few articles or papers discuss this integration (Howard, 2023, Linder, 2021). This observation comports with my experience that very few clinicians integrate EMDR and couples therapy. Therapists face three main challenges: epistemological, modal, and counter transferential.
