Frequently Asked Questions

Does EMDRIA provide basic training in EMDR?

EMDRIA sets the standards and grants approval to individuals or organizations to provide EMDR training.

Are "EMDRIA Membership" and "Certification in EMDR" the same thing?

“EMDRIA Membership” and “Certification in EMDR” are separate processes. To be a member with EMDRIA, you must be working to complete your license in mental health and be working to complete the initial EMDR Training. View Membership Benefits here. Certification in EMDR is an additional credential that you can work to obtain after completing the EMDR Training. View Certification Criteria and FAQ

Keep in mind that if you hold both statuses with us, your Membership renewal is an annual renewal, and your Certification or Approved Consultant status renews every two years. You can always log into your member profile to review your end dates for both.

Does completion of the EMDR Training mean that you Certified in EMDR?

No. EMDRIA Certification in EMDR is an additional credential beyond EMDR Training.

I'm a member of EMDRIA, but I'm not listed on the website.  Why is that?

Only Full Members of EMDRIA receive the member benefits of being listed on our Find a Therapist directory. Associate members and NonMembers do not appear on this directory. If you have a Full Membership with us and you are not appearing, please contact the EMDRIA office, so that we may assist you.

Are EMDR International Association, EMDR Institute and Trauma Recovery/EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs all affiliated?

No. EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) is a non-profit 501(C)6 membership and credentialing association that sets the standards and requirements for EMDR Training and for continuing education in EMDR. The EMDR Institute is a for-profit training organization, one of EMDRIA's Approved Training Providers, and offers several EMDRIA Approved Credit Programs (continuing education in EMDR). Trauma Recovery/EMDR HAP is a non-profit 501(C)3 organization. Trauma Recovery/EMDR HAP is also an EMDRIA Approved Training Provider and offers several EMDRIA Approved Credit Programs. The businesses of these three organizations are completely separate and not affiliated.

Does EMDRIA maintain a general EMDR Listserv?

No. However, EMDRIA does offer members the opportunity to interact through the EMDRIA Online Community. Once you join a Special Interest Group (SIG), members can post clinical questions and other members can respond with useful information. EMDRIA is also on Facebook, Twitter and LinkdIn, which all serve as a medium for members, non-members and the public to post comments and share ideas.

Must members obtain EMDRIA Credits (Continuing Education in EMDR) to maintain their membership in EMDRIA?

No. Members are only required to pay their annual dues (at their highest level of eligibility) and subscribe to EMDRIA’s Code of Conduct to maintain their membership. EMDRIA Credits are only required for becoming or renewing our credentials of EMDRIA Certification in EMDR and Approved Consultant in EMDR. However, EMDRIA Members are encouraged to further their EMDR education if they choose!
