This resource includes a list of inclusive terms related to emotions, positive and negative cognitions to be used with EMDR therapy clients.


Resource Description

This resource includes lists of emotions and positive and negative cognitions.

  • Emotion Options: Glad, Mad, Sad, Scared
    • Examples: Free, grateful, envious, impatient, hopeless, isolated, helpless, shameful.
  • Negative Cognition Options: Distorted, Maladaptive, Self-Referencing Beliefs
    • Examples: “I am worthless,” “I don’t belong (because I’m _____),” “I am bad / shameful,” “I am in danger,” “I am not in control.”
  • Positive Cognition Options: Reality-Based, Adaptive, Self-Referencing Beliefs
    • Examples: “I am worthy / worthwhile,” “I can find people who will accept me,” “I’m fine as I am,” “That danger is over,” “I am now in control.”
