Managing COVID-19 related psychological distress in health workers: Field experience in northern Italy
This letter to the editor discusses COVID-19 related stress for healthcare workers in northern Italy and the need for psychological support.
Article Abstract
“Northern Italy was one of the first sub-regions of western Europe hit by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic during early 2020. Caring for COVID-19 patients, health-care professionals have had to deal with profound ethical dilemmas and with fear of infection for themselves and their families. A total of 172 doctors and 40 nurses had died due to COVID-19 by the 13 July 2020 in this region. Based on lessons learned from previous pandemics (e.g., SARS), such an exceptional and unexpected stressful exposure was likely to exert both acute and long-lasting effects on the psychological well-being of medical/health professionals, as reported by the earliest mental surveys in China.”
