Chapter Abstract
“This chapter addresses the historical trauma of African Americans and barriers to mental health treatment. The focus is on exploration of somatic therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and Dr David Grand’s neuro-experiential integrative model, Brainspotting (BSP) from an African-centered perspective. A history of mental illness among African Americans; access to clinicians of color; cultural sensitivity, attunement, and responsibility will be offered. Common interventions currently being used in mental health services and somatic therapy, EMDR, and BSP are explored through an African-centered lens.”
