Transcranial photobiomodulation as an adjunctive therapy for persistent anxiety and depression in patients undergoing psychotherapy, EMDR, and/or SSRI treatment: A case series
Study evaluates the potential therapeutic effect of transcranial photobiomodulation (TPBM) as an adjunctive intervention for anxiety and depression despite receiving psychotherapy, EMDR, and taking SSRIs.
Article Abstract
“Background: Recurrent depression and anxiety can be resistant to monotherapies, including psychotherapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Transcranial photobiomodulation (TPBM), a non-invasive neuromodulation therapy that uses near-infrared light, has shown antidepressant effects in animal studies and randomized clinical trials.
Objective: To evaluate the potential therapeutic effect of TPBM as an adjunctive intervention for patients experiencing persistent anxiety and depression despite receiving psychotherapy, EMDR, and taking SSRIs.
Methods: Three adult female participants experiencing chronic anxiety and depression completed a 12-week TPBM protocol using a Neuronic 1070 nm helmet (10 Hz, 75–100 % intensity, 10–15 min daily). All participants were concurrently undergoing CBT and EMDR; two were taking SSRIs. Outcome measures included the GAD-7, DASS-21, and Cognifit cognitive testing at baseline, week 6, and week 12. Participant feedback was collected at all intervals.
Results: All three participants completed the protocol with over 92 % adherence. Two participants reported improved sleep quality and reduced irritability. All three participants showed reductions in DASS-21 depression scores, although GAD7 anxiety and DASS21 anxiety and stress outcomes varied. One participant reported no perceived benefit despite objective improvement, highlighting the potential influence of cognitive attribution patterns.
Conclusion: TPBM may serve as an effective adjunctive therapy for anxiety and depression in patients undergoing conventional interventions with minimal improvement. Further studies with larger samples and control groups are needed to validate these preliminary findings.”
