Vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout: Tools for EMDR therapists
This article shares key learning points about vicarious trauma and so EMDR therapists can maintain healthy self-care.
Article Abstract
“This article shares key learning points from the authors’ vicarious trauma training sessions over the last ten years. We include definitions of vicarious trauma, how to identify and guard against it and a catalogue of resources that therapists can use for their own well-being and in their recovery from it.
Our belief is that all EMDR therapists should have a good understanding of vicarious trauma and maintain awareness of it in their daily practice. The self-care recommendations, resources and tools shared in the accompanying article are essential to limit therapists’ exposure to vicarious trauma and to repair any damage taken on in their nervous systems. This approach may improve the lives of therapists and help to prolong therapeutic careers. ”
