“This chapter focuses on the application of EMDR within older adult populations. It outlines the importance of working holistically with this client group in terms of intergenerational trauma and the uniqueness of the assessment and formulation process in the history gathering and preparation phases of EMDR. Particular attention is paid to what therapists need to consider when carrying out EMDR therapy with older adults. The importance of neuroplasticity and how EMDR helps the brain form new neural pathways and promote healing is discussed within the AIP model. The effective use of EMDR with clients who have a neurodegenerative disorder, working with their carers and family members, and the complexities therapists might face is discussed using both research-based and practice-based components.”
