Chapter Abstract
“This chapter on EMDR therapy and cancer illustrates the specificity of EMDR therapeutic intervention for oncological patients. The field of psycho-oncology is defined as understanding and treating cancer-related distress, in which symptomatology may be consistent with a diagnosis of clinical or subclinical posttraumatic stress disorder. Here we discuss the literature in the area of EMDR therapy and cancer, including the results of six experimental studies that support adaptive information processing comprehension of cancer-related experiences as highly specific and potentially traumatic events. This chapter also describes EMDR therapy guidelines for the conceptualization and planning of the treatment of oncological patients with cancer-related distress. A clinical case to highlight the application of EMDR therapy to this unique clinical population is presented, and recommendations for future research is discussed.”
