The use of EMDR G-TEP in the treatment of ADHD symptoms in adults
This study explored the impact of the EMDR Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) on ADHD and PTSD symptoms in adults.
Thesis/Dissertation Abstract
“This study explored the impact of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in adults. Using a single-group, pre- and post-test design, participants completed one to two G-TEP sessions and were assessed using the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales 2nd Edition Self-Report Short (CAARS 2-Short) and the National Stressful Events Survey PTSD Short Scale (NSESSS). Findings demonstrated a significant reduction in ADHD symptoms, specifically in the ADHD index (p = 0.03) and the ADHD probability scores (p = 0.02). While PTSD symptoms decreased under a directional hypothesis, the results were not statistically significant using a nondirectional test. The study highlights the potential for G-TEP to address trauma-related factors that exacerbate ADHD symptoms. Future research should focus on randomized controlled trials, long-term effects of G-TEP, and its application for children with ADHD. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on innovative, trauma-informed approaches to mental health care, offering new insights into group-based treatments for complex conditions such as ADHD.”
