EMDR therapy for panic disorder and agoraphobia
This chapter illustrates the EMDR guidelines for the conceptualization and EMDR therapy process for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, and describes the EMDR therapy for their treatment.
Chapter Abstract
“EMDR therapy for panic disorder and agoraphobia is based on the premise that panic and agoraphobia may have a traumatic etiology (with dissociation as a possible causal and maintaining factor), and that panic attacks can be considered as a traumatic experience in their own right. This chapter reviews the research in this area, consisting of three randomized controlled trials, a comparative pilot study and case descriptions (single and in series). This chapter illustrates the EMDR guidelines for the conceptualization and planning of the therapeutic intervention for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, and describes the EMDR therapy for their treatment. A clinical case will illustrate the practical application of each phase as well as the most common blocks and difficulties a therapist meets working with this presentation.”
