EMDR therapy for symptoms related to pre-verbal trauma in children
This chapter describes the use of EMDR therapy for children with presenting symptoms resulting from pre-verbal trauma.
Chapter Abstract
“Pre-verbal memories, containing implicit, maladaptive information without context and meaning, can lead to trauma symptoms. This chapter describes the use of EMDR therapy for children with presenting symptoms resulting from pre-verbal trauma, based on the work initially developed by Lovett, Tinker, and Wilson. Over time, different variants of EMDR narrative approaches have been developed to reprocess pre-verbal memories. This chapter provides an overview of the elements that are essential to work with pre-verbal trauma, such as the integration of the Infant’s Mental Health perspective, illustrated with a description of the parent–child EMDR therapy procedure. Although therapists report positive treatment results in clinical practice, research exploring the effectiveness of EMDR with pre-verbal trauma is in its infancy.”
