EMDR therapy with individuals who have sexually offended: Addressing root causes with the offense driver model
This chapter aims to help EMDR practitioners conceptualize relevant offense-driving targets and responsibly apply EMDR therapy concepts so that they remain consistent with literature on treating individuals who have sexually offended and individuals with compulsive sexual behaviors.
Chapter Abstract
“There is a small but growing body of literature on the effectiveness of applying EMDR therapy to forensic populations, including individuals who have sexually offended. The Adaptive Information Processing model inherent in EMDR therapy is an efficient way to conceptualize, uncover, and shift the distorted cognitions and implicitly held beliefs underlying dynamic risk factors associated with sexual offending. EMDR therapy is a psychotherapeutic treatment that works to efficiently resolve traumatic, adverse, or formative experiences which may be driving current thoughts and behaviors that lead to sexual offending. This chapter aims to help EMDR practitioners conceptualize relevant offense-driving targets and responsibly apply EMDR therapy concepts so that they remain consistent with extant literature on treating individuals who have sexually offended and individuals with compulsive sexual behaviors.”
