Exploring the group resource enhancement protocol (G-REP) in a UK community learning disability team: A service evaluation
This service evaluation examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of the Group Resource Enhancement Protocol (G-REP), an EMDR-informed group intervention, delivered to staff in an NHS Community Learning Disability Team.
Resource Abstract
“This service evaluation examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of the Group Resource Enhancement Protocol (G-REP), an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)-informed group intervention, delivered to staff in an NHS Community Learning Disability Team. Twenty-three staff attended one of 4 G-REP groups offered over a 4-month period. Standardized measures of resilience, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout were taken at baseline, post-intervention, and 1- and 3-month follow-up time points, with qualitative feedback gathered immediately post-intervention. Complete datasets were available for 17 participants. Resilience (CD-RISC-10) increased and secondary traumatic stress (ProQOL) decreased immediately post-intervention, with similar patterns maintained at 1 and 3 months. Compassion satisfaction and burnout, both measured using ProQOL, showed short-term improvements that were not sustained. Burnout measured across all 3 subscales using MBI-HSS showed no durable change. Over half the service team attended, and among those providing feedback (n = 17), 94% rated the session as helpful and all indicated that they would attend again. G-REP appeared feasible and acceptable within this service, with early indications of change in self-reported resilience and secondary traumatic stress. Given the service-evaluation design, lack of a control condition, and single-site sample, findings should be interpreted cautiously. Larger controlled studies are required to determine efficacy, clarify mechanisms of change, and establish longer-term impact.”
