Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for intimate partner violence survivors: A systematic review and meta-analysis
This study presents a systematic review of ten studies and a meta-analysis of five studies examining the effectiveness of EMDR for women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization.
Article Abstract
“Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization can cause mental health issues and examining treatment options for survivors of IPV is needed. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has shown promise in reducing symptoms associated with IPV. This study presents a systematic review of ten studies and a meta-analysis of five studies examining the effectiveness of EMDR for women who have experienced IPV victimization. Standard protocols were followed to identify studies to include in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Most studies showed significant reductions in post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. However, two studies involving incarcerated women did not show benefits, suggesting that contextual factors may influence treatment response. Five studies were included in the meta-analysis and found a significant reduction in post-traumatic stress (Hedges g = 2.55 p = .001), anxiety (Hedges g = 1.56, p < .001), and depressive symptoms (Hedges g = 1.29, p < .001) comparing pre- and posttest scores.”
