Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy for fear of cancer recurrence in patients with familial melanoma: A pilot randomized waiting list-controlled trial
In this non-blinded pilot RCT, patients indicated for increased risk of developing melanoma and elevated fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) were randomized to immediate EMDR therapy (2–4 sessions) or a 6-weeks waiting list.
Article Abstract
“Background and aims: Patients with familial melanoma often experience elevated fear of developing melanoma and/or recurrence of melanoma (FCR)1. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, proven effective for treatment of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, has the potential to reduce health-related fears such as FCR2.
Method: In this non-blinded pilot RCT, patients who were under surveillance for increased risk of developing melanoma and elevated FCR were randomized to immediate EMDR therapy (2–4 sessions) or a 6-weeks waiting list. FCR was measured using the Cancer Worry Scale (CWS). Measurements were taken pre-and post-treatment and at follow-up. Mixed model analyses assessed between-group differences over time and within-group changes after delayed EMDR therapy in the waiting list condition.
Results: Of 25 patients screened, 11 met inclusion criteria (intervention: n = 6; waiting list: n = 5). No baseline differences were found between groups. A significant interaction between time and group (Est = 3.91, SE = 1.164, p = .003) indicated a greater FCR reduction in the intervention group. In the waiting list condition, FCR remained stable during waiting, but significantly decreased after delayed EMDR therapy (p < .001), with effects sustained at 3-month follow-up.
Discussion: This pilot RCT provides preliminary evidence that EMDR therapy may effectively reduce FCR in familial melanoma patients. Findings support its potential as a transdiagnostic intervention for health-related anxiety.
Conclusion: This study contributes to the growing empirical support for EMDR as a treatment for FCR2,3.”
